Sausage and Cabbage Skillet
This sausage and cabbage skillet is a quick and easy meal you can whipped up in 15 minutes. Just throw all the ingredients in one pan for a quick dinner.
I already love regular green cabbage so I thought why not substitute that for some red cabbage and see how it tastes. Pretty much tastes the exact same, but looks better.
What is so great about this recipe you can use leftover sausage like I did with a recent trip to local BBQ place and ordering too much. Or you can buy a package of already cooked sausage links straight from the grocery store.
The difference between green and purple cabbage
There’s not a whole lot of difference between the two as far as tastes. It’s said red cabbage has a bit of a peppery taste and it is smaller and more dense.
Red cabbage actually has 10 times more vitamin C compared to green, but both pack a healthy dose.
A great benefit to red cabbage is the amount of antioxidants it carries due to that purple color. The antioxidant, anthocyanins can contribute to healthy weight loss.
What kind of Sausage to Use
I personally buy the pre cooked smoked turkey sausage. I do this because it is more on the healthier side than regular sausage.
But my favorite sausage is Polska kielbasa and if it was up to picking the best tasting this would be it.
Also if you have any leftover sausage, like I did one time from some BBQ we ordered, that is great too.
How to make
Take a big pan and turn it on medium high heat and add butter (Photo 1) Next add the chopped up cabbage (Photo 2)
Now add the red wine vinegar (Photo 3) and the Toni’s Cajun seasoning (Photo 4)
Stir continuously for 5 minutes (Photo 5) Add sausage and stir for another 5 minutes and serve (Photo 6)
Tips for this recipe
- If you need some time saving tips you can always cut your cabbage and sausage ahead of time and store them in ziploc bags until you are ready to cook later.
- I believe 10 minutes cooking is perfect for this recipe because the cabbage still has a little crunch. But if you like softer cabbage cook the cabbage alone for an extra 10 minutes.
- You can always add onions to this recipe if you prefer. Add them right after the butter has melted and cook for 10 minutes before adding the cabbage.
- And of course you can substitute the red cabbage for green cabbage if that is more to your liking.
