Parmesan Garlic Bread
Why not make your own Parmesan garlic bread at home with just a few easy steps. This bread is perfect to serve with your next Italian dinner.
Oh garlic bread. How I could eat the whole loaf by myself. That blend of garlic, Parmesan, spices, and carbs that tastes so good. Plus it is so cheap to make with a loaf of french bread only costing 1 dollar.
Believe it or not you probably won’t find “garlic bread” in Italy. It’s an American-Italian creation that came around in the 50’s in the states.
The Italian version of what we call garlic bread is what they call bruschetta. Crunchy french or baguette bread cooked with oil or butter with garlic. Check out this Pepperoni Bruschetta recipe that I just love.
The Ingredients for Parmesan garlic bread
- French bread– you can pick up a loaf for a $1 at most stores
- Butter– “more butter, more better” no specific kind just don’t use margarine because it will make for a completely different taste
- Olive oil– because no Italian dish doesn’t consist of it
- Minced garlic– fresh garlic is always best because of the stronger flavor, but the already minced in the jar kind works as well
- Garlic salt– I think this really gives it a good flavor. Garlic powder will not do you want that salt
- Italian seasonings– because what other type of seasoning would you use?
- Parmesan cheese– both grated and shredded
Making the Butter Mixture
Add soften butter to a bowl (Photo 1) and then add the olive oil to the bowl (Photo 2) Next add the garlic salt (Photo 3) and then the Italian seasonings (Photo 4)
Add the minced garlic to the bowl (Photo 5) and next the grated Parmesan cheese (Photo 6) Then stir all the ingredients together (Photo 7) until completely blended (Photo 8)
Making Parmesan garlic bread
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and get a long baking sheet. Take your french bread and slice it in half longways and lay the outside down on the pan (Photo 9)
Split the butter mixture in half and put one half on each slice of bread and spread out in an even mixture (Photo 10) Sprinkle the shredded Parmesan cheese equally on each slice of bread (Photo 11) and cook for 10-12 minutes
Can garlic bread be frozen?
Yes it can! Make the butter mixture spread it on the bread. Lay out on a baking sheet butter side up and put in the freezer for about 30 minutes to let the butter harden up.
Take it out of the freezer then wrap with plastic wrap and store up to 3 months. When you’re ready to cook take it out of the freezer unwrap it and place on a baking sheet and cook at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Tips and Tricks
- This way of cooking it gives you a crunchy outside and soft inside. If you want an all around soft put the two halves together and wrap fully in foil
- The shredded Parmesan cheese does get a little crunchy. If you don’t like that texture add it five minutes before cooking or skip all together
- Do use real butter. It gives such a better flavor than a butter substitute such as margarine.
- Buy fresh french or Italian bread. If anything prepare the garlic bread without cooking and freeze it.
- If you want a little pop of color to this add some fresh chopped parsley to the mixture.
